New Zealand’s moderate climate means that there is always something to do, no matter what time of the year you choose to visit. Below is a general guide to New Zealand's holiday hot spots and seasonal peak times:

Summer: December 1 - February 29
The most popular destinations during the summer school holiday period (early December to late January) tend to be lakes and beaches.  In the South Island the Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, central South Island lakes, Akaroa, Hanmer Springs, Queenstown and Wanaka swell with visitors.  In the North Island, vacationers head for the beachside locations of Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, Coromandel and the Bay of Islands.

During summer in New Zealand (particularly around Christmas and New Year) be prepared for heavy traffic – especially on the main State Highways – and take care whilst driving.

It is advisable to book holiday accommodation well in advance – especially backpacker hostels, motor inns, campgrounds and tent sites.

Holiday-goers with children may find the Christmas period an ideal time to travel.  Those who are looking for peace and tranquillity, on the other hand, may wish to visit these regions during February – generally the warmest month and a lot quieter.

Autumn: March 1 - May 31
New Zealand autumns are mild, with daytime temperatures ranging between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. During this season most tourist destinations are relatively uncrowded – but care should be taken around the Easter holiday break when roads become busy.

During April, New Zealand primary and secondary school holidays occur.  During this month shopping malls, family attractions and movie complexes are often busy – so be prepared for crowds at these locations.

Winter: June 1 - August 31
Winter in New Zealand means an influx of visitors to alpine resort towns such as Queenstown, Wanaka, Hanmer Springs and Whakapapa.  If you are planning on staying at one of these destinations it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance – particularly during Queenstown’s ‘Winter Festival’ (late June).

New Zealand's winter school holidays are a very popular time for families to go skiing or snowboarding.  Ski areas throughout New Zealand will be very busy during this holiday period, so keep that in mind when planning your winter holiday in New Zealand.

Spring: September 1 - November 31
Spring in New Zealand is generally warm, and a great time to enjoy the outdoors.  School holidays occur in late September, so be prepared for crowds if visiting family attractions or ski areas at this time.
